Beginner Guide, Part 1: What is 3D Printing?

What is 3D Printing?

3D printing is not paper printing!

Upon hearing the word “3D printing”, many people might have a picture in their head that “Would it be paper printing?” “Print the image in 3D?” Or “Probably print cartoon animation”. In fact, all of which are the complete opposite of what it is!

With the world moving fast, we may not be able to keep up with things that change and develop rapidly. As you may not have expected, something that you have missed and misunderstood could completely change your life and your perspective of the world.

One of the technologies that will change your life that we are proud to present today is “3D printing” which is not for printing paper!

Get to know it.

3D printing is a technology for creating digital models (3D files) into real objects by adding layers of materials known as Additive Manufacturing (AM). Simply put, it is creating a prototype object or even an object that can be used for real purposes by “3D printer”.

The first thing you need is a 3D model file with extension extensions like STL, MESH, and 3mf. You can find them on 3D file distribution sites, or you can create your own using authoring 3D software such as CAD, Solidworks, Fusion360 and Netfabb.

If not using paper, what is the material for printing?

Many people may wonder that if the paper printer that we have been using for a long time uses paper as a printing material, what is the “3D printer” used for printing?

The answer is “multiple materials”. As there are many brands of printers, such as Markforged, Zortrax, and Formlabs, for various printing purposes. There are different materials for each printing purpose, such as plastic, nylon, resin, and even metal!

Who is using it?

Up to this point, even many people may have changed the image in their head. But some people may still doubt in mind that, who will use it?

You might think that it is a far off issue. Actually, it has played a part in the daily lives of people all over the world, including in Thailand itself for a long time.

With the image of the new technology, people see it as a matter of entrepreneurs and manufacturers only. Actually, the users of it range from teachers, students, doctors, businessmen, engineers, architects, jewelers to a modeler!
